The Scaling of Utterance-initial Pitch Peaks in Puerto Rican Spanish: Evidence for Tonal Preplanning
نویسنده
چکیده
For this study, an experiment was created to test for the existence of tonal preplanning in Puerto Rican Spanish. The scaling of utterance-initial F0 high peaks was examined as a function of utterance length, which was defined as total utterance duration (in seconds). Eight speakers from Caguas, Puerto Rico, were recorded reading 24 distinct utterances of varying length for analysis. The data revealed that all eight of the subjects began higher in their pitch range as utterance length increased. Results show that tonal preplanning is present and that the lookahead mechanism is being employed. Due to variation within and between speakers and the presence of other tonal contour events such as downstep and upstep, the conclusions accord with recent studies in Romance tonal preplanning that label this phenomenon as soft preplanning (Liberman & Pierrehumbert 1984, Prieto et. al. 2006).

Evidence for soft preplanning in tonal production: Initial scaling in Romance*
In this study, the scaling of utterance-initial f0 values and H initial peaks are examined in several Romance languages as a function of phrasal length, measured in number of pitch accents (1 to 3 pitch accents) and in number of syllables (3 to 15). The motivation for this study stems from contradictory claims in the literature regarding whether the height of the initial f0 values and peaks is ...
متن کاملTone, Utterance Length and F0 Scaling
One important strand of research into the scaling of fundamental frequency has been concerned with the hypothesis that utterance length is a determining factor of initial pitch height, with longer utterances involving a higher initial F0 than that found in shorter utterances. Most work in this vein has been done on ‘intonation’ languages, with very little investigation having been carried out o...
متن کاملWord segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour
Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...

Recent studies in the field of intonational phonology have shown that information-seeking questions can be distinguished from confirmation-seeking questions by prosodic means in a variety of languages (Armstrong, 2010, for Puerto Rican Spanish; Grice & Savino, 1997, for Bari Italian; Kügler, 2003, for Leipzig German; Mata & Santos, 2010, for European Portuguese; Vanrell, Mascaró, Prieto, & Torr...
متن کاملTonal Template for Background Information: the Scaling of Pitch in Utterance-Medial Parentheticals in French
This paper shows that utterance-medial parentheticals elicited in controlled conditions in French have a typical tonal template, in which pitch is scaled down to some extent in non-intonational phrase-final syllables. Downscaling is implemented primarily as pitch register lowering, while pitch range compression seems speaker-dependent. Results also show remarkable inter-speaker consistency in l...
